When the oxygen (O2) that is all around us rises to the upper atmosphere, and is exposed to the sun’s ultraviolet rays, this oxygen is naturally turned into ozone(O3).That is the “ozone layer” you read about that protects us from the sun’s harmful UV rays. Since ozone is heavier than air it naturally falls back to earth. This is the ozone that naturally purifies our air and water.  Ozone provides natural benefits to our earth. Because it is made up entirely of oxygen ozone is sometimes called “activated oxygen”.

Ozone is the second most powerful sterilant in the world and its function is to destroy mold, bacteria, viruses and odors.  Ozone also occurs commonly in nature as a by-product of lightning strikes during thunderstorms and by healthy forests.  The “fresh, clean, spring rain” smell that we notice after a storm results from natures creation of ozone. Ozone is also created by water falls.  If natural ozone ceased to exist, life on this planet would change drastically.  Ozone is a natural way of purifying the air we breathe. Ozone’s benefits are widely accepted yet little publicized.

While some people mistakenly refer to ozone as smog, smog is actually a combination of hydrocarbons, primarily CO , CO,(deadly carbon monoxide) and SO  that react with UV rays from the sun to form nitric oxides (NOX). These hydrocarbons are most commonly created by the exhaust that comes from automobiles and factory emissions.

When used properly ozone has a safety of use far greater than poisons and toxic liquids commonly used for eradicating mold, viruses and micro biological organisms and without complex disposal procedures. OZONE has the ability to kill any bacteria or virus known to man.

By rupturing the cell wall of the offending organisms and oxidizing offensive odors it effectively renders them harmless and In the process it reverts back to the O2 that we need in the air we breathe. The Food and Drug Administration has just amended its food additive regulations to permit ozone use as an anti-microbial agent. The amendment, published in the Federal Register on June, 28 2001 allows for ozone use in gaseous and aqueous uses, and for safe and effective anti-microbial treatment of meat, poultry, and other food products. Tests have shown that common household bacteria, mold, mildew, and fungus are greatly reduced by the addition of ozone in typical household environments. Specifically but not limited to; E-Coli, Salmonella Choleraesuis, Staphylococcus Aureua, Candida Albicans, and Aspergillus Niger have been shown to have dramatic reductions in population in independent laboratory tests. It is a proven fact that ozone KILLS mold. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, in conjunction with the Safe Drinking Water Act of 1991, confirmed that ozone was effective in ridding water of hazardous pathogens, including chlorine resistant Cryptosporidium.” Agricultural Outlook, June/July, 1998.

Ozone acts 3000 times faster than chlorine as a bactericide, and it is the strongest oxidant commercially available for air & water treatment. To remove serious odors, kill bacteria, and destroy mold it is important to perform High Ozone Shock Treatments in UNOCCUPIED ROOMS ONLY!

The amount of ozone concentration will determine how quickly and effectively the job will be accomplished. Because 03 quickly reverts back to 02, ozone generators that only produce small amounts do not bring the atmosphere in a room or rooms to a level of sufficient saturation to be fast and effective. If less is needed because either the area is small or the offending situation is minor you can simply reduce the run time of the generator, however if the area is larger and the offending situation more severe, a longer run time will be in order.

Caution! If you purchase a device that can only produce amounts less than 6000 mg/hr you may find that after hours of running it will not be able to produce the expected results. 

As soon as ozone is formed in the generator and dispersed in a room some of it decays back into oxygen. This step occurs by several processes including, natural reversion to oxygen due to ozone’s chemical instability.  The natural process is speeded up by the presence of walls, carpets, furniture, etc. and reaction with odor causing organic material. Reactions with bacteria again consumes ozone by oxidation reactions.  Additionally ozone itself has a very short half life which means that any extra ozone will return to oxygen within about 30 minutes, in amounts equal to half its level.

Depending on the conditions short duration daily treatments, medium duration weekly, longer at two week intervals, or monthly shock treatments may be recommended. Usually the circulating air brings with it (mold spores and pollutants) or temperature and humidity, animals and humans, bring back in to our spaces things that will need to be treated again. You only need to use it as you recognize that it will be beneficial.
